As 20 year residents of East Northport, my husband and I take great pride in the community. Both of our children graduated from the Norhtport/East Northport schools, and it was there that I first became involved in community service. I began as a class mother when my children were young, and eventually became President of the East Northport Middle School PTA. During that same time, I started my own accounting and bookkeeping business, Simply Accounting Services. As a Quick Books Pro Advisor, I install and set up Quick Books software for small business owners who want to simplify and streamline their bookkeeping process, and as a result, save both time and money. I have enjoyed giving back to the community that has provided a wonderful place to live for our family.
I joined the East Northport community when my son was an infant. I recognized that East Northport was a great place to raise a family, even though it added an additional one hour to my daily commute to New York City, where I was a Senior Consultant and partner with Milliman, USA, a premier actuarial and employee benefits consulting firm. I served as a consultant to major US and international companies assisting them with a myriad of financial, administrative and communication issues relative to their retirement, healthcare and other welfare benefit plans. I also served as a manager of the local Employee Benefits communications and healthcare practices, as well. I was a frequent speaker and author on such topics as retiree healthcare, Medicare, and the importance of creating effective employee benefit communication messages and materials.
In 2004 I decided to leave the corporate world to start my own local business. I built a successful shop-at-home window
treatment business - Budget Blinds of East Northport--that enabled me to blend my extensive consulting and creative skills
in a totally new direction. I loved the opportunity to run a business in my hometown and to get to know the people and
merchants who are so critical to the vitality of East Northport. After 4 years, however, I decided to return to my roots
and I now serve as a Benefits Consultant in the Health & Welfare practice of Chernoff Diamond, a benefits advisory firm
located on Garden City.
Back in 1994, many storefronts along Larkfield Road remained empty and the East Northport was looking very depressed. Stuart Besen, a young lawyer, teamed up with a few other energetic hopefuls to pool their ideas on how to revitalize the area. In June, 1994, the East Northport Chamber of Commerce was officially formed under their leadership and guidance. Today, Stuart continues to work with the Chamber while devoting many hours to his law practice of Besen and Trop LLP. In 2005, he was elected to serve as Councilman on the Huntington Town Board. Since his election, Stuart has been a forerunner in many Town initiatives including the installation of synthetic multi purpose recreational fields; environmental issues, hybrid vehicle incentives, recycling presentations, solar power fast track programs; sexual predator legislation including innovative mapping program and accessory rental apartment restrictions, etc.
As Executive Director, Sharon is responsible for the Chambers daily operations, events and the administrative duties of the Chamber.
Sharon has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in education.
